This degree is designed for students wishing to pursue careers in stage design and technical theatre. This section encompasses all areas of specialization that work together in the production of live performance. Set design, scenic carpentry, scenic painting, lighting, sound, props, and stage management are taught through lectures and hands-on labs.

Minimum admission requirements

To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:

  1. Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  2. Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
  3. Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).

Admission to many Dalhousie programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Program-specific admission requirements

Bachelor of Arts requirements:

  • Minimum overall average: 70%

  • Academic English 12

  • Four additional academic subjects

Program options

You’ll study in labs on such subjects as set construction, props, lighting and sound, scenic rigging and flying, along with lectures in stage design, stage management, colour theory, safe working practices in the theatre, and more. You’ll work on Fountain School stage productions every year, where you can apply your skills in a real theatre experience.

What you will learn

This is an 4-year Bachelor of Arts degree that combines both practical and academic study. Students are exposed to all aspects of technical theatre including set and prop construction, lighting and sound design, stage management, and set design.
