Responsible conduct of research

Responsible conduct of research

Responsible conduct of research, as described in the Tri-Agency Framework, is a commitment by researchers to honest and thoughtful inquiry, rigorous analysis, dissemination of research results and adherence to the highest professional standards in order to create a positive and productive research environment.

In practical terms, this principle involves:

  • conducting research involving humans in an ethical manner

  • ensuring proper animal care and use

  • engaging in research integrity practices around data management, supervision and attribution

  • safe and responsible handling and use of hazardous materials required for research purposes

  • ensuring that research involving Indigenous peoples and communities is premised on respectful relationships

At Dalhousie, we take these values and principles to heart, and—with guidance from the Tri-Agency Framework and the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research—will continue to strive to maintain a positive research environment. To this end, all researchers are required to familiarize themselves with the relevant research policies and guidelines, including those concerned with conflicts of interest and scholarly misconduct.
