With Dal's one-year Diploma in Meteorology, the only program of its kind in Atlantic Canada, you’ll gain a strong background in atmospheric science—training you for a career as a forecaster or preparing you for studies at the graduate level.
Admission requirements
Minimum admission requirements
To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:
- Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
- Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
- Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).
Admission to many Dalhousie programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
Program-specific admission requirements
Students with a general 90-credit hour BSc degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or other quantitative disciplines, may apply for admission into a one year Diploma in Meteorology program, provided they have completed the appropriate Physics and Mathematics courses. A strong background in Physics and Mathematics is necessary, and courses taken should cover Vector Calculus and differential equations.

Program options
You can choose to take the one-year DMet after completing a three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or another quantitative subject area in the Faculty of Science. Or take the DMet as part of a four-year BSc with a Major in Physics.
If you're a Physics and Meteorology student, you have the option of taking part in the co-op education program.

What you will learn
To complete the DMet program at Dalhousie, you’ll need to take nine required courses:

Atmospheric Physics
Synoptic Meteorology I and Synoptic Meteorology II
Atmospheric Dynamics I and Atmospheric Dynamics II
Physical Oceanography
Atmospheric Chemistry
and Light Scattering, Radiative Transfer, and Remote Sensing
After completion of the Diploma program, students are eligible to be considered for admission to a graduate program in Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie.
