Chinese Studies (Minor)

Minors allow you to customize your degree by combining disciplines and connecting your studies more broadly.

Why choose this minor?

Mandarin is spoken by over a billion people and is one of the 5 official languages of the United Nations. Your Minor in Chinese Studies starts with an introductory language class and expands to include a range of advanced language classes as well as options to study Chinese literature and Asian thought, religion, cinema, and economics.

Careers and future studies

Knowledge of Asian-related subjects and proficiency in the Chinese language provide graduates to go on to a wide range of careers such as: arts, journalism, and education; politics and law; international business and trade; foreign services and public relations; and linguistics and translation.

What you will learn

At Dalhousie, we don't just teach you the Mandarin language, we immerse you in Chinese culture.

A minor in Chinese Studies is an excellent interdisciplinary complement to a course of studies at Dalhousie in any area of arts, social sciences, sciences, or other programmes. You'll gain a solid foundation for further academic, professional, and/or personal explorations of this fascinating culture, its history, and its complex relationship to other parts of Asia as well as to the West.

You will explore Chinese customs, history and civilization in and beyond the classroom. There are opportunities to participate in Chinese New Year celebrations, put on a fashion show, enjoy calligraphy lessons, enjoy Chinese music and film, and practice your skills in the Chinese Conversation Circle.
