Financial information

A university education is a significant financial investment. Every student is unique, and so are their financial circumstances. We offer competitive tuition, a robust scholarship and bursary program, and resources and support to help you explore financial options and develop a plan that works for you.

Program options

You can choose either a co-op program (five years) or a non-co-op program (four years). Choosing the co-op program will give you paid work experience in various roles and organizations.

As a chemical engineering student, you can also earn a Certificate in Biomedical Engineering alongside your degree.

Past participants in the co-op program have worked in sectors including government, health, private industry, and natural resources.

The following Chemical Engineering program options are offered by Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Engineering. Connect with an academic advisor after you start your studies to explore options such as:

  • Bachelor of Engineering with Major

  • Bachelor of Engineering with Major (Co-op)

  • Certificate in Biomedical Engineering

What you will learn

In the first year of your degree, you will develop a broad foundation in engineering with courses in math, engineering, science and design. In your second year you will enter your chosen discipline and begin to take chemical engineering-specific courses that focus on chemical processes and fluid flow. In your third year, you’ll concentrate on chemical engineering technical areas and have the opportunity to start co-op. Your final year will provide you with the opportunity to choose three technical elective courses to tailor your studies to your interests. The Certificate in Biomedical Engineering is also available to chemical engineering students.

The Chemical Engineering curriculum provides you with a broad background in chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Sample courses may include:

  • Engineering Design I

  • Mechanics I: Statics

  • Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering

  • Thermo-fluid Engineering II

  • Organic Chemistry for Chemical Engineers

  • Green Engineering

  • Chemical Reaction Engineering

  • Thermal Unit Operations

  • Polymeric Biomaterials

  • Pilot Scale Operations

  • Environmental Biotechnology

  • Brewing Science

The detailed knowledge of engineering principles and practice you gain during your degree will prepare you to explore a wide range of activities in the field of chemical engineering, such as  operations, design, research & development, and management.
