Federal funding

Research at Dalhousie is largely made possible thanks to national funding grants and contracts from the Government of Canada. Examples of the most commonly accessed programs at Dalhousie are listed below.

Tri-Agency (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR)

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) is the Canadian federal funding agency that promotes and supports discovery research and partnered-project research in the natural sciences and engineering.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the Canadian federal agency that promotes and supports postsecondary-based research and training in the humanities and social sciences.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the Government of Canada's agency responsible for funding health research in Canada.

Canada Research Chairs

Canada Foundation for Innovation

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) helps to fund the infrastructure needs of researchers. Please note that CFI is an institutional program and applications must be submitted on behalf of the institution. John R. Evans Leaders Fund

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) provides support for the acquisition or development of research infrastructure for projects. The JELF helps Dalhousie to attract and retain researchers who are leaders in their field and to remain competitive in priority areas as identified in the university's Strategic Research Direction.

At Dalhousie, the JELF allocation is managed at the Faculty level. Researchers interested in applying for a JELF should consult with their Dean’s Office.

Renovations

Researchers requiring renovations to accommodate research infrastructure will require a quote from Facilities Management. The Faculty or department administrator will be able to facilitate this request. A quote requires at least six months to prepare.
