Edward Angus Banting (Engineering and Agriculture) (1908–1966) was a visionary who understood the importance of innovation and technology and its application to agriculture.

Teresa Mellish (Dip Agr’66) is co-founder of Farmers Helping Farmers, a non-profit initiative that has conducted hundreds of development projects in Kenya to address food security, health and education challenges.

George Armoyan (BEng’83) is a real estate developer, investor, entrepreneur and mentor. He is the executive chairman of G2S2 Capital Inc.; president & CEO of Clarke Inc.; and a founding partner of Creative Destruction Labs Atlantic

Ruma Bose (MBA’99) is co-founder and managing partner of an investment fund linking high-growth technology companies with opportunities to benefit the humanitarian sector. 

Wadih Fares (BEng’80) escaped the civil war in Lebanon, settled in Nova Scotia, learned English, graduated from Dal and founded his own company, WM Fares Group, a design, construction and property management company. A community activist, Fares has been a board member and donor for many charitable organizations and engines of economic development. 

William Murphy (DDS’56) (1932–2016) was a family dentist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He was co-founder and president of Mersey Seafoods Limited, and co-founder of the J & W Murphy Foundation, which has donated millions to various causes. 

John G. Paul (MPA’83, LLD’24) is helping build stronger, healthier First Nations communities across Mi’kma’ki. As executive director of the Atlantic Policy Congress (APC) of First Nations Chiefs Secretariat, he is helping ensure they have clean water and new economic opportunities.

Chief Sidney Peters (Dip Tech Agr ’84) is the fourth chief of Nova Scotia’s Glooscap First Nation. He’s led efforts to rebuild the community’s fortunes and pride through new policies, housing and investments.

Brice Scheschuk (BComm’94) is managing partner with Globalive Capital, an investment platform. He’s also a speaker associate of Creative Destruction Labs Atlantic.

Chairman and CEO of Southwest Properties Jim Spatz (MD’74) practiced emergency medicine for 13 years before joining the property development business. His Spatz Foundation has made substantial contributions to arts and culture, health, entrepreneurship and Jewish causes. 

Dr. Cathy Campbell (BPE’75, MSc’77) channels her indomitable spirit to propel herself and other athletes forward. She’s held leadership roles at the Olympics and FIFA World Cup matches, been president of the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine, and serves on Dal’s Alumni Association and Dal Advisory Council.

Dr. Christine Chambers (BSc’96) is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Children’s Pain, a professor of psychology and neuroscience in pediatrics at Dal and a clinical psychologist. She is also the scientific director of Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP).

Dr. Sultan Darvesh (MD’93) is a behavioural neurologist and trained organic chemist with interest in medicinal chemistry. His research focus is the development of therapeutic and diagnostic agents for Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Allen Finley (MD’80, PGM’81) is a professor of anesthesia, pain management and perioperative medicine at Dal. He currently holds the Chair in Pediatric Pain Management at the IWK, where he is also the medical director of the Pediatric Complex Pain Clinic.

Dr. Irving Fish (MD’64) co-launched the Ethiopian School Readiness Initiative (ESRI) and is the former director of Pediatric Neurology at New York University.

Dr. Sura Hadad (BSc’98, DDS’03) is a dentist dedicated to giving back who has provided free dental care for Syrian refugees among other selfless initiatives.

Dr. Nada Haidar (BSc’93, DDS’97) is a Halifax-based dentist, educator and active community volunteer, including at the North End Community Health Centre.

Dr. Bonnie Henry (MD’90) is a public health officer in B.C. and a globally accomplished health leader recognized for leadership around SARS and B.C.’s Covid-19 response.

Dr. Bruce Johnson (BScPH’74) was the first Black graduate from a college of pharmacy in Nova Scotia. He is also a member of the Black Employment Resource Centre in Yarmouth, which he helped launch in 1997.

Dr. Frank Lovely (DDS’59) is the former head of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery program at Dalhousie. He was named Founder of the Year 2019 by the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Thomas “Jock” Murray (MD’63, LLD’13) is a physician, researcher and internationally renowned Multiple Sclerosis expert. He is a former Dalhousie Dean of Medicine and inductee to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

Dr. Margaret Oulton’s (MD’90) scientific discovery led to the development of a test to determine if an unborn infant’s lungs had developed sufficiently for them to withstand induced premature birth. 

Dr. David Precious (DDS’69, MSc’72, LLD’13) (1944–2015) and his team performed free corrective surgery on children with cleft lip and palates in Vietnam, Tunisia, Brazil and India, and trained local practitioners to do the surgery as well. He was Dean Emeritus and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Dalhousie.

Dr. Ken Rockwood (MD’91) is a world‑leading geriatrician and anti‑ageism campaigner, whose practical clinical work with older adults living with frailty and dementia earned him the 2021 Ryman Prize, a prestigious international accolade. 

Over the last 50 years, Dr. Bill Stanish (MD’70) has built an impressive career in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. He is also the lead volunteer and namesake of Dal’s Oulton-Stanish Centre.

Dr. Ronald Stewart (MD’70, LLD’17) has worked in emergency medicine for over 50 years and is a leader in public health.

Dr. Alfred Waddell (MD’33) (1896 to 1953) was a civil rights champion and physician. He treated many patients from historically Black Nova Scotia communities including Africville, Beechville and Preston.

Richard Bedford Bennett (1870–1947), was a Canadian lawyer, businessman, philanthropist and the 11th Prime Minister of Canada.

Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard (BA’75, MSW’77) is a highly regarded social worker, educator, researcher, community activist and advocate for social change.

Scott Brison (BComm’89) is a former member of Canada’s parliament, a former cabinet minister and a former Dalhousie Chancellor.

Megan Leslie (LLB’04) is a former Member of Parliament for Halifax, and President and CEO of World Wildlife Fund – Canada.

Angus L. Macdonald (LLB 1921) (1890–1954) was an orator, premier of Nova Scotia, and the namesake of Halifax and Dartmouth’s first harbour bridge.

Elizabeth May (LLB’83) is a politician, environmentalist, author, activist, lawyer and the longest-serving female leader of a Canadian federal party (Green Party of Canada).

Alexa McDonough (BA’65, MSW’67, LLD’09) (1944–2022) was the first woman to lead a political party in Nova Scotia when she was elected the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party's leader in 1980.

Anne McLellan (LLB’74) was a cabinet minister and deputy prime minister of Canada. She was solicitor general, minister of health, and minister of justice of Canada. She was also Chancellor of Dalhousie University.

Robert Stanfield (BA’36, LLD’81) (1914–2003) served as the 17th premier of Nova Scotia and leader of the federal Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. He is the namesake of Dal's Stanfield Conversation.

Mark de Jonge (BEng’99) is a Canadian sprint kayaker, primarily specializing the 200 m individual kayak event. De Jonge won a bronze medal in the K-1 200 m at London 2012.

Karen Furneaux (MScHP’06) is a Canadian sprint kayaker and Olympian, competing in individual (K-1) and team (K-2, K-4) events. At Sydney 2000, she finished fifth in K-2 500 m.

Adrienne Power (BComm’05) is a Canadian sprinter and Olympian, who specialized in the 200 m dash. She won two bronze medals for the 200 m and 4×400 m relay at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. She is now a coach and mentor.

Julia Rivard Dexter (BRec’99) is a Canadian sprint kayaker and Olympian, who finished ninth in the K-4 500 m event at Sydney 2000. She has since become an entrepreneur and mentor for women in STEM as the co‑founder and CEO of Eyeread Inc.
