Dr. Sina Varamini (BEng'12, MASc'14) was awarded the prestigious Committee Excellence Award of the Year 2023 by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) for his leadership of the Soils and Materials Committee (SMC). With over six years dedicated to TAC, Dr. Varamini has effectively guided the SMC in its efforts to attract and retain a diverse group of members from contractors, suppliers, agencies and academic institutions. The committee, which includes more than 100 members representing all facets of transportation across Canada, organizes conference sessions that address various aspects of transportation infrastructure.
Recently, the committee pursued a decarbonization pathway for transportation materials to ensure the net-zero targets of 2023 and 2050 are realistic and attainable for roadway materials. Additionally, the committee's working group on recycled asphalt pavements has held a series of lunch-and-learn events, culminating in a pooled-fund project to establish Canadian best practices for the use of recycled asphalt pavement materials.
