Dalhousie has ranked among the top 400 universities globally and among the top 17 universities in Canada in the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
More than 2,500 universities were ranked this year, which places Dalhousie among the top 20 per cent of universities worldwide. ARWU publishes the results for the top 1,000 institutions each year.
Dalhousie is joined by Laval University, Simon Fraser University, University of Saskatchewan and University of Victoria in the ranking of top 301-400 globally and 13-17 nationally.
ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™ and Social Sciences Citation Index™ in the Web of Science™, and per capita performance of a university.
ShanghaiRanking also releases the Global Rankings of Academic Subjects each year. This year, Dalhousie ranked first in Canada and 32nd globally in Oceanography. Atmospheric Science tied for second in Canada, with a global ranking of 76-100.
