Elective: Data Science for Everyone

We caught up with Professor Dr. Yannick Marchand to hear more about CSCI 2203: Data Science for Everyone , an approved elective for the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. 

CSCI 2203: Data Science for Everyone provides students with an overview of the world of data science research while focusing on how the analysis of data from social media and other internet-based sites (e.g., Twitter, Google books) can be used to tackle complex and fascinating societal questions.

What will a student learn in Data Science for Everyone?

In this course, students will:

  • Grasp the main methodological steps in data science (e.g., research design, data collection, dissemination)
  • Learn the core methodology in machine learning
  • Acquire a knowledge of basics elements in graph theory: node, link, degree, clustering coefficient, and shortest path.

Throughout the course, we will survey several exciting research projects in this field to provide students with a general understanding about research methods and analyses (e.g. machine learning, social network analysis) in a non-technical manner that is accessible to those of various educational backgrounds.

Does the course have any interesting highlights you’d like to share?

Students will find the course content is delivered through a blend of lectures, multi-media, online materials/articles, and assignments designed to enhance critical thinking and discussion-based formats.

Students particularly enjoy exercises demonstrating how data is used in the context of societal practices. In one example, we’ll be using the Google Ngram Viewer to investigate human behavior and cultural trends. We’ll also spend time in the course illustrating the use of social network analysis in diverse disciplines. We explore the use of analysis in forensics, ecology, medicine and more. 

How might Data Science for Everyone tie into a student’s program (major) or career plans? 

Students will quickly learn data science is everywhere and is useful in all fields of study and work!
