Thesis Option

Researching and writing a thesis is a terrific way to develop deeper knowledge of something about which you are passionate; the range of SIM faculty members' expertise provides wide scope for choosing a topic.

Completion of a thesis is great "practice" for many aspects of professional life, and a successful thesis can differentiate you in the job market.

Quick thesis facts:

• The thesis is worth 12 credit hours, or the equivalent of four 3-credit hour elective courses.
• Ideally, you will begin the thesis literature review in the summer between your first and second years.
• You will do most of the research in the fall term, and write the thesis in January and early February for review by your committee and thereafter by the external reader.
• You will present a summary of your research at a public "student research" event in SIM.
  

Getting started:

• Speak to the SIM Director first. There is a within-program GPA requirement for thesis students.
• Chat with your advisor about choosing your remaining elective courses
  Consider potential supervisors in SIM and chat to them about your research interests.
• Ask to see previous MLIS theses to give you a sense of what is expected
