Annual Fund

Monies donated to the Annual Fund are predominately used to fund the Master of Information (MI) Student Assistantships. This fund may also be used to support scholarships and awards, as well as educational or research activities.

Annual Find donations may be made "in memory of" or "in honour of". Donors may choose to make a one-time or a regular monthly contribution.


Dalhousie Horrocks National Leadership Fund

Honour Norman Horrocks' outstanding leadership in librarianship.

The Dalhousie-Horrocks National Leadership Fund was established in 2007 to honour Dr. Norman Horrocks, OC, PhD, FCLIP (1927-2010) for his outstanding leadership in the field of librarianship in North America, Australia, and Europe. Over several decades Dr. Horrocks, former Director of the School of Information Management and Dean of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University, pursued a distinguished career of very active involvement in professional associations in the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Australia, the United States, and Canada. His many contributions, for which he received local, national and international recognition, have advanced the field and the careers of countless individuals. Learn more about Dr. Horrocks here.

The fund supports a scholarship and an associated lecture series through an endowment donated by the many former students, colleagues, friends and admirers of Norman Horrocks.

The scholarship will be used to support MI students who demonstrate leadership potential in information management, specifically in libraries. The associated lecture series will help promote librarianship and publicly acknowledge individuals whose active leadership in relevant professional associations has made a difference locally and internationally. A lecture will be given annually by a recognized leader in the field.

The award and lecture was presented for the first time in the fall of 2013.


Stephanie Downs Memorial Fund

After living in London, England, for some time, Stephanie Downs decided to return to Canada to pursue her MLIS and become a librarian. She chose to study at Dalhousie for its sense of community, welcoming faculty and Maritime culture.

Stephanie was a SIM MLIS graduate (MLIS 2006) who was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the end of her last year at SIM. She lost her hard-fought battle with cancer on May 27, 2007.

After Stephanie’s death, Dalhousie University and members of her family generously launched a memorial award to grant scholarships to SIM students entering their second year of study. Like Stephanie, the successful candidates for this award have a demonstrated commitment to leadership and student life at SIM, and to international librarianship. As her friends and colleagues, we urge you to honour Stephanie as she truly was – an enthusiastic leader, a lover of life and a true friend.

The Memorial Fund was established in memory of librarians and information professionals with an enduring connection to our program, department (formerly the School of Information Management), the profession, and our IM community. The eventual goal of this fund is to provide scholarship support to incoming MI students, and in turn continue the legacy of those information management leaders who are no longer with us.
