Certificate Description

Individuals and institutions involved in the provision of healthcare services in Canada must be able to effectively navigate a complex body of law that defines their legal rights and responsibilities. The Healthcare Law Certificate for Non-lawyers provides awareness of these rights and responsibilities and furnishes strategies for dealing with legal issues arising in the healthcare context. It also equips students to be informed consumers of legal information and offers the skills needed to contribute to law reform initiatives aimed at creating a more inclusive, equitable, fair, and effective healthcare system.

This Certificate would benefit individuals who are or will be participating in Canadian healthcare delivery. For example, the Certificate would be relevant to healthcare providers, healthcare administrators in public and private institutions, health policy makers, and government employees working in health-related departments and agencies. A background in law is not needed.

The Certificate is not intended to train students to perform the functions of legal counsel.

Healthcare Law Certificate Courses:

The Certificate is awarded on completion of all the following online courses:

All three courses draw upon interactive, synchronous (live) classes delivered via video conferencing and asynchronous (on-demand) course content accessible through Dahousie's learning management system (Brightspace).  An option is available to complete an in-person offering of Healthcare Law (HESA 6360) for those who can physically attend at Dalhousie University on the dates and times that the in-person course is scheduled. An online version of Healthcare Law (HESA 6360) is available to those who are unable or do not wish to complete the course in-person.

Admission Requirements

Admission is open to anyone who meets the Dalhousie Faculty of Graduate Studies minimum admission requirements, which are:

  • a four-year Bachelor's degree
  • a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study; and
  • a degree granted by a university of recognized standing
Applicants must provide original transcripts of all previous academic work, 2 letters of reference, and a completed application form.  Applicants whose first language is not English must also provide proof of English language proficiency.

Applicants are not required to write an entrance exam.

Professional experience is not needed for admission. Individuals who have completed any undergraduate program (e.g., arts, science, commerce, economics, etc.) are welcome to apply.
