Forum Review

Day I of the Carbon Neutrality Forum was a resounding success. Catherine Martin welcomed the delegation to Mi’kma’ki. This was followed by reviews of the federal and provincial perspectives, defining CCUS and Geostorage of CO2, and opportunities for Nova Scotia and Canada. NRCAN provided a Map Forward of the federal opportunities.

There was a review of the carbon transport and storage regulations, Nova Scotia policy and priorities, the role of industry and a strategy for propelling Canada past other jurisdictions. The day wrapped up with provincial perspectives from Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick and a summary of the path to carbon Neutrality.

Day II continued smoothly off the successful first day, covering projects and studies underway in Norway, the UK and North Sea sectors, examples of geostorage in the Netherlands, and storage constraints in Ontario. We reviewed the London Protocol and offshore regulatory issues, as well as pore volume assessments and evaluation methodology. Current CO2 sequestration projects in Saskatchewan and Alberta were highlighted along with the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line and Maritimes Energy Corridor. Followed with Socio-Economic Issues impacted by CO2, natural gas and hydrogen, the role of renewables, and a presentation by the Canada Infrastructure Bank on supporting CCUS development in Canada.
