Rebecca Stevens-GreenPhD CandidateBAS with Honours: Molecular Biology & Genetics and Psychology (University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada) ResearchFor my PhD research in the LaRoche lab, I am studying the factors controlling the biological carbon pump (BCP) in the Northwest Atlantic and Labrador Sea. The BCP describes the process whereby phytoplankton and other marine microbial species remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. It is hypothesized that the ability of the BCP to function is due to the composition of phytoplankton species in algal blooms. My research project will focus on studying some of the specific phytoplankton involved in this process, as well as the effects of climate change on species involved in the BCP. I am also interested in bioethics, scientific communication and using scientific research to develop policies that can mitigate climate change.
