Tips for supporting accessibility at work for National Accessibility Week

Posted by Human Resources, Accessible Employment on May 30, 2024 in Human Resources

In honour of National AccessAbility Week, Dal HR's Accessible Employment team has pulled together a collection of tips and resources to help support accessibility at Dal.

This year's theme, "Forward Together: Accessibility and Inclusion for All," emphasizes the need for collective efforts to create a barrier-free Canada. At Dalhousie, we believe we can all contribute to this vision.

Create more accessible presentations and events

  • Simple slides in a Power Point presentation go a long way in avoiding overstimulation and help screen reader users to access content.

  • High contrast colours are better for text, with black over white background the most readable. More tips.

  • Wearing clothes in colours that contrast with your skin colour will help people, including American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and individuals with low visibility, see your face more clearly.

Knowing where to go when you need help

  • If you already have equipment in your workspace but need help with an ergonomic set up, the school of Occupational Therapy and Environmental Health and Safety are able for a free consultation. Click here (login required).

  • To report problems with an accessible washroom at Dalhousie, you can contact Facilities Management by e-mailing or by phone at (902)494-3345.

  • If you are an employee experiencing a barrier that is preventing you from full participation in employment, you can contact accessible.employment@dal.ca for resources and supports available. If you are a student, you can contact access@dal.ca
