Final notice: Planned power outage

Posted by Facilities Management on May 15, 2024 in Facilities Management

Almost every building on both Studley and Carleton campuses will be closed this coming weekend from Saturday, May 18 at 4 a.m. until Monday, May 20 by 7 a.m.

The following residences will remain open:

  • LeMarchant Place
  • Risley
  • Sherriff Hall.

The power will be turned off to allow Facilities Management to conduct legislated high voltage maintenance work. Staff have been working with departments and faculties to provide backup power where needed and to provide access to critical research.

Please do the following in advance of the shutdown:

  1. Power down and unplug any computers, printers, photocopiers, etc. (especially those that are not connected to surge protectors), which may be damaged should an electrical surge occur.
  2. Remove any perishable food or drink from lunchroom or office fridges/freezers. In addition to the tasks listed above, laboratories must also (if it is safe to do so), power down and/or disconnect any laboratory equipment (especially any heating devices, such as ovens or hot plates, which may come back on when power is restored).
  3. If it is safe to do so, turn off any process gases, process liquids, or water supplies to equipment.
  4. Release pressure on any systems that may still be under load, such as hydraulic cylinders.
  5. Ensure any laboratory backup systems that might be in-place are in good working order (batteries fully charged, gas cylinders full, etc.).
  6. Properly stopper/cap and store any laboratory chemicals that may be present.
  7. Fully close all fume hood sashes.
