Dal students share opinions about democracy and climate change on CBC News

Posted by Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on October 19, 2023 in Community Highlights

Dalhousie University's Stanfield Conversations: Talking Democracy is a speaker series that brings together distinguished thinkers to discuss the issues facing democracy. It focuses on critical challenges to democracy, examining imaginative and inspiring responses to them.

In 2021, the discussion of "Democracy on Edge" laid the foundation for future Stanfield Conversations and followed last year with a discussion about "Digital Democracy." The series continues with the third Stanfield Conversation asking, "Can democracies meet the challenge of climate change?"

Leading up to the 2023 Conversation, CBC Nova Scotia asked five Dal students to answer a few questions about democracy and climate change.

Learn about the students, read their answers and watch some of their video interview clips here on the CBC Nova Scotia community page and see additional clips from their video interviews on Instagram at @cbc_eastcoast.

This year's discussion will go beyond the concepts established in previous Stanfield Conversations, and will focus on the topic, "Can Democracies meet the Challenge of Climate Change?"

On Tuesday, October 24, we will welcome three distinguished guests to Dalhousie to discuss this topic:

  • Naheed Nenshi, former mayor of Calgary
  • Mark Jaccard, Distinguished Professor of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University (on leave) and current Chair & CEO of the BC Utilities Commission
  • Megan Leslie, President & CEO of World Wildlife Fund Canada, former Member of Parliament for Halifax, and Dalhousie alum

The moderator for the 2023 Stanfield Conversation will be the host of CBC Mainland Nova Scotia's afternoon show Mainstreet on Radio One and Dalhousie alum, Jeff Douglas.

In-person seating for the event happening in the Joseph Strug Concert Hall is now sold-out, but you can still join the conversation virtually. Register now to receive free access to the livestream of the event happening on October 24 at 7:00 p.m. ADT.
