Health and Human Performance research seminar with Dr. CJ Blye

Posted by School of Health and Human Performance, Faculty of Health on June 20, 2023 in General Announcements

This week, the Health and Human Performance research committee will host its final research seminar of the term. Since June is recreation month in Nova Scotia, we are very lucky to have Dr. CJ Blye of our Recreation and Leisure Division presenting their work on, “Understanding the role of Canadian National Parks in the immigrant experience”. The presentation will occur on June 23rd @ 2pm in Dentistry 4117.

As the summer approaches and we consider spending time in parks with our friend and family, please consider how the natural world has shaped who you are and what those experiences have meant to you. Do you have place in nature that feels like home?

Canadian National Parks cover almost 350,000km2, represent each of Canada’s unique natural regions, and welcome more than 20 million visitors per year and yet while they represent the geography of this country, they fail to represent the demographics of Canada in a meaningful way and there are still significant barriers to visiting these essential places.  The focus of this research talk is investigating how New Canadians perceive Canadian national parks and how their experiences in parks have contributed to a sense of belonging and a sense of place in Canada as well as their overall connection and relationship with nature (i.e., nature relatedness).
