Employment Opportunity: Residence Assistant(s) – CTMP Study Abroad Class, Berlin, Germany

May 2 – May 27, 2023

CTMP/GERM 3610X/Y provides an intensive introduction to the themes of collective memory, public space, inter-generational responsibility, and historical trauma. Taught entirely on site in Berlin, Germany, this course offers students the opportunity to consider the ethical, aesthetic, and public struggle to memorialize the victims of Nazi fascism and Cold War Stalinism through daily seminars, visits to museums and public art installations, as well as more informal explorations of memorial initiatives ‘from below.’

The course runs from May 3 to May 26, 2023. During that time, the Residence Assistant(s) (RAs) will assist the class instructors by providing support to the 25 students enrolled in the class. Duties may include: providing initial crisis response, offering on-call support to students as needed, communicating daily any concerns or issues with class instructors, and liaising with the accommodations staff to ensure students are following regulations. The RAs will be expected to contribute to the student life of the course by maintaining a friendly, respectful, and safe environment, but will not attend classes or take on any course-related responsibilities.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree of at least two year’s standing. They should possess excellent leadership, communication, and listening skills, and be able to work independently. Experience in leadership positions and in providing peer support is highly desirable: applicants with Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (A.S.I.S.T.) and Mental Health First Aid will be given priority, as will those with German language skills.

Remuneration is a private room in The Circus Hostel (with ensuite bathroom and daily breakfast), an A/B Berlin transit pass (streetcar, U-Bahn, S-train, bus), cell-phone add-on plan for international calling, and return flight and airport transfers to Berlin, Germany. RAs will arrange their own return flights, up to a set maximum, but they must arrive at The Circus Hostel on Tuesday May 2, 2023 and depart Saturday May 27, 2023.

Qualified applicants are asked to submit by email a cover letter, a curriculum vitae or resume and the names and contact information of three references no later than Monday March 20, 2023 to: Sharon Brown at Sharon.brown@ukings.ca.

Positions subject to enrolment.

Questions about the position may be directed to Dr. Sarah Clift at sarah.clift@ukings.ca.
