On Dec 6, 2022, Marianne Hagen, who manages the Dean’s Office in the Faculty of Management, was awarded the Platinum Jubilee Medal for her volunteer service with St. John Ambulance (SJA). The award, established in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne, is given to ‘those who have devoted themselves to the service of others, especially through the pandemic’. A medic for over 30 years, Marianne is the provincial disaster co-ordinator for SJA. Most recently she helped care for individuals in the Halifax Regional Municipality whose apartments were destroyed by Hurricane Fiona.
Marianne is also retiring from her position Managing the Dean’s Office, after more than 30 years at Dalhousie University. Following short stints at the Registrar’s Office, then the Faculty of Graduate Studies, she came to the Faculty of Management, where she’s been for almost 25 years. Much of her work has involved fundraising and engaging with the community.
Earlier this month, Marianne organized and ran the 10th and final Scotiabank Ethics in Action Case Competition and Gala. The two-day event draws on students from across Canada and (for the first time this year) the United States, and thanks to Marianne’s work over the years, 2022 saw the largest number of participants. As a colleague who always finds the answer and brings back a story to tell, she will be missed by many in the faculty of Management as well as throughout Dalhousie University.
