Final Notice: Planned power outage Saturday November 5 for Hicks, Shireff and Dunn buildings

Posted by Facilities Management on November 3, 2022 in Facilities Management

There will be a planned power outage Saturday, November 5 starting at 6 a.m. for up to 15 hours which will impact the Henry Hicks Building, Shirreff Hall and the Dunn Building. Shirreff Hall will have backup power, but the other buildings will be closed.

The Environmental Health and Safety Office would like to remind everyone to prepare their areas for the scheduled power outage by completing the following tasks before they leave the day before the outage:

  • Powering down and unplugging any computers, printers, photocopiers, etc. (especially those that are not connected to surge protectors).
  • Removing any food from refrigerators that might spoil if the fridge or freezer warms.
  • If it is safe to do so, powering down and/or disconnecting any laboratory equipment (especially any heating devices, such as ovens or hot plates, which may come back on when power is restored).
  • If it is safe to do so, turning off any process gasses, process liquids, or water supplies to equipment.
  • Releasing pressure on any systems that may still be under load, such as hydraulic cylinders.
  • Ensuring any laboratory backup systems that might be in place are in good working order (batteries fully charged, gas cylinders full, etc.)
  • Properly stoppering/capping, and storing, any laboratory chemicals that may be present.
  • Fully closing all fume hood sashes.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in ensuring this essential maintenance is completed successfully.
