TEACHING ASSISTANT / MARKER / DEMONSTRATOR POSTING

TITLE: Ethics in Science TA130, Integrated Science Program/Philosophy
POSTING DATE: August 5th, 2022

POSITION: TA130 (Teaching Assistant, 130 hours)
WORK PERIOD: Fall term (September-December 2022)
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Faculty of Science, Integrated Science Program (and Philosophy)
PAY RATE: According to the C.U.P.E. agreement
WORK ASSIGNMENT: Support the first-year writing component of the Integrated Science Program (SCIE 1506/1507). Mark several formal written assignments for PHIL 1050.03, Ethics in Science, using a marking rubric. Teach weekly tutorials (Mondays 9:30-1030am and/or 10:30-11:30am) including writing workshops. Meet with students individually.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Undergraduate degree completed in philosophy, graduate degree completed or in progress in science, philosophy, or a related field, and a strong interest and experience in teaching writing and critical thinking skills. Candidates with a background in science as well as philosophy will have priority. Previous experience with the Integrated Science program will be considered an asset.

TITLE: Writing in Science TA65, Integrated Science Program
POSTING DATE: August 5, 2022

POSITION: Two positions: TA65 (Teaching Assistant, one term, 65 hours)
WORK PERIOD: September to December 2022
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Faculty of Science / Integrated Science /
PAY RATE: According to C.U.P.E. agreement
WORK ASSIGNMENT: Support the first-year writing and research project component of the Integrated Science program (DISP), specifically for first year students writing a formal field trip report on a coastal dune study. Mark individual written assignments (introduction + methods, results + discussion, final paper) submitted by 25 students. Assist teaching a coastal dune field trip at Conrad Beach (September 29th 8:30am-5pm). Provide extensive feedback on written papers and return marked assignments within one week. Follow the Integrated Science writing class guidelines. Hold office hours and meet with students (can be virtually) to discuss their work. Coordinate marking with the DISP Writing in Science Instructor. Support the Writing in Science Instructor in the overall delivery of the writing component of DISP (i.e. posting marks to Brightspace).
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Undergraduate degree completed in a physical sciences or life sciences discipline. Research experience at the post-graduate level, and an interest in teaching scientific writing and research skills are preferred. Previous experience evaluating formal scientific writing is an asset. Previous field study experience and experience with an integrated science program are assets.
