Position Summary
The role of the Language and Culture Assistant (LCA) is a key role within the English in Canada Program at Dalhousie. This program is a language and cultural immersion experience for international university students that combines language study, professional development, and a robust sociocultural program.   
 
The LCA contributes to an engaging and enriching sociocultural experience for students in the program, planning, coordinating and facilitating a variety of evening and weekend activities, outings and events. The LCA also contributes to maintaining student safety and well-being via ensuring policies and regulations of the program are adhered to and providing student support and referrals.  
 
LCA requires an individual who is organized, enthusiastic, self-motivated, capable of functioning independently and as part of a team, is empathetic and fair, and possesses excellent intercultural communication skills.  
 
LCA Role Expectations

Programming

  • In consultation with the Student Engagement Team, planning, coordinating and facilitating a variety of evening and weekend activities, outings and events, according to student interest and program priorities;
  • Monitoring student activities to ensure participation and engagement; and
  • Participating in regular coordination meetings with the Student Engagement Team and with students themselves

Student Support and Safety

  • Supporting student language learning by encouraging the use of English in day-to-day conversations;
  • Being familiar with academic and wellness services on-campus and referring students as required;
  • Mediating conflicts as they arise with the students involved, exploring possible solutions and referring as necessary;  
  • Ensuring the safety of students during activities on and off campus; and
  • Explaining and enforcing program and university policies, regulations and rules.

LCA Role Requirements

  • Previous demonstrated leadership experience is required;
  • Demonstrated time management skills, organization, problem solving and multi- tasking skills is required;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills in group dynamics;
  • Intercultural communication skills required; fluency in language(s) other than English considered an asset;
  • Ability to work flexibly, both independently and part of a team;  
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and be creative; and
  • First Aid and/or Crisis Intervention training would be an asset.

LCA Training Requirements
The LCA would be required to attend a 2-day paid pre-sessional training held on June 16th and 17th before program commencement.

Position Summary
The role of the Language and Culture Assistant-Residential (LCA-R) requires an individual who is enthusiastic, self-motivated, capable of functioning independently and as part of a team, is empathetic and fair, possesses excellent communication skills, and is willing to commit their efforts to the enhancement of the English in Canada Program at Dalhousie. This program is an immersion experience for international students that combines language classes, a university elective course in English, and a robust sociocultural program.  The LCA-R plays an important role in the students’ sociocultural experience and is required to reside in residence along with participants in the program. This position is under the supervision of the Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC).
 
The scope of the LCA-R role includes living in residence with the students, advising and providing support, coordinating and leading afternoon and evening activities, supervising weekend day trips and activities, enforcing the rules and regulations of the program, and attending weekly meetings with the team of assistants and organizers.
 
LCA-R Role Expectations

Programming
In consultation with the Student Engagement Team, planning, coordinating and facilitating a variety of evening and weekend activities, outings and events, according to student interest and program priorities;
Monitoring student activities to ensure participation and engagement; and
Participating in regular coordination meetings with the Student Engagement Team and with students themselves

Student Support and Safety

  • Being on-call overnight and weekends to ensure safety and well-being of students in residence;
  • Explaining and enforcing program and university residence policies, regulations and rules;
  • Joining students for meals on campus;
  • Being familiar with academic and wellness services on-campus and referring students as required;
  • Mediating conflicts as they arise with the students involved, exploring possible solutions and referring as necessary;  
  • Ensuring the safety of students during sociocultural activities on and off campus;
  • Supporting student language learning by encouraging the use of English in day-to-day conversations; and
  • Accompanying groups of students to the airport for arrival/departure and supporting residence check-in/check-out procedures.

LCA-R Role Requirements

  • Previous Residence Assistant, residence living, and/or demonstrated leadership experience is required in this role;
  • Intercultural communication skills required; fluency in language(s) other than English considered an asset;
  • First Aid and/or Crisis Intervention training would be an asset;
  • Good time management skills, organization, problem solving and multi- tasking skills;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills in group dynamics;
  • Understanding of needs and factors affecting international students;
  • Ability to work flexibly, both independently and part of a team; and
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and be creative.

LCA-R Training Requirements
Offers of appointment are contingent on completing the following training requirements:
• Attend a paid 2-day training session held on June 16th and 17th before program commencement (6 hours per day).

Position Summary
The role of the Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC) is a key role within the English in Canada Program at Dalhousie. The SEC contributes to an engaging and enriching sociocultural experience for students in the program by leading, coordinating, planning, and facilitating a variety of evening and weekend activities, outings and events. The SEC also contributes to maintaining student safety and well-being via ensuring policies and regulations of the program are adhered to and providing student support and referrals. The SEC's key purpose is to direct and lead the Student Engagement Team, consisting of Language and Culture Assistants (LCAs) and program organizers. The SEC will be under the supervision of the English in Canada (EIC) Program Coordinator.
 
The role of Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC) requires an individual who has demonstrated leadership skills, is enthusiastic, self-motivated, capable of functioning independently and as part of a team, is empathetic and fair, possesses excellent communication skills, and is willing to commit their efforts to the enhancement of the program.
 
SEC Role Expectations

Coordination & Administration

  • Providing coordination and guidance to a team of LCAs;
  • Hosting a meeting with LCAs Monday through Friday to review the day’s activities, distribute necessary paperwork, manage petty cash, and discuss any issues of importance;
  • Providing updates, communicating concerns, and directing questions to the EIC Program Coordinator;
  • Acting as a liaison between the EIC Program Coordinator and LCAs; and
  • Implementing administrative processes such as completing incident reports, managing petty cash, etc.

Programming

  • In consultation with the Student Engagement Team, planning, coordinating and facilitating a variety of evening and weekend activities, outings and events, according to student interest and program priorities;
  • Monitoring student activities to ensure participation and engagement; and
  • Participating in regular coordination meetings with the Student Engagement Team and with students themselves.
