RE: Search for Associate Dean Students and Postdoctoral Fellows
Applications are invited for the position of Associate Dean Students and Postdoctoral Fellows in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. This is a five-year, 40% position that will begin on 1 July 2022 and is open to tenured faculty at Dalhousie. The position provides support to Dalhousie’s graduate students, postdoctoral fellows/employees, faculty and graduate administrative staff. The Associate Dean Students and Postdoctoral Fellows reports to the Dean of FGS and is responsible for:
A. Support for Graduate Community, Academic Integrity, Appeals
- Provides advice, guidance and support to students, supervisors, graduate coordinators and graduate administrators on regulations, especially as they relate to student progress and program completion.
- Provides advice and support for postdoctoral fellows, including support for PDF Research Day.
- Assists with the resolution of concerns or conflicts related to program difficulties, including supervisory relationships.
- Serves as Academic Integrity Officer for Faculty of Graduate Studies.
- Serves as respondent for FGS in academic appeals.
- With FGS staff, helps align regulations, policy and processes with best practices to serve graduate community.
- Liaises with other university services including Student Health and Wellness, University Ombudsperson, Human Rights and Equity Services.
B. PhD Defences
- Oversees PhD defences and support to defence chairs.
- Approves external examiners.
- Reviews and updates processes as needed.
C. Committees
- Serves as a voting ex officio member of FGS Faculty Council.
D. Other
- Carries out related work in consultation with the Dean of FGS.
Qualities and Experience:
- Commitment to principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility.
- Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of strong conflict mediation skills.
- Proven ability to deal professionally with sensitive, confidential information.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others, including FGS staff, Dean and Associate Deans, departments and student support services.
- Proven record of excellence in graduate student education, including supervision.
- Keen interest in supporting student success.
- Interest and willingness to learn and stay abreast of best practices in graduate education.
Compensation: Annual stipend of $4,000. FGS will also compensate the successful candidate’s home Faculty for their time.
