The School of Health and Human Performance in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Health invites applications from qualified candidates for a career-stream position at the Instructor rank commencing July 1, 2022.  

Dalhousie University is comprised of 6,000 faculty and staff amongst its 13 Faculties. Current enrollment is 18,500 graduate and undergraduate students. As part of Canada’s U15 research-intensive group, Dalhousie University is an influential driver of the region’s intellectual, social and economic development. It is the largest university in Atlantic Canada and is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq in the heart of Halifax (Kjipuktuk), a scenic coastal city and capital of Nova Scotia which is home to 13 Mi’kmaq First Nations, a deeply rooted African Nova Scotia community, an increasingly diverse population which also includes a vibrant workforce of people living with disabilities.  

The Faculty of Health’s faculty, staff and students are committed to improving the well-being of individuals, families, communities and populations through diverse health programming, collaborative research and strong community partnerships. The Faculty of Health is one of the largest faculties at Dalhousie, comprised of eight schools, one college and one program, more than 200 faculty members, 80 staff members, and approximately 3,000 students. The School of Health and Human Performance’s vision is ‘physical and mental wellness for all’. The School offers programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degrees in Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, and Recreation Management.

The primary duties of this position include the preparation and delivery of undergraduate and graduate teaching across the School of Health and Human Performance as well as act as the Interprofessional Health Education (IPHE) Coordinator for the School. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses corresponding with a demonstrated area of expertise and the teaching needs of the School that contribute broadly to a diverse areas across the School and may include:

KINE 1106 (Philosophy and ethics),

KINE 3200 (Socio-cultural aspects of sport), 

HPRO 3351 (Injury prevention and safety education), 

HPRO 3360 (Multicultural health promotion research and policy), and 

LEIS 2296 (Leadership and group dynamics). 

The role will also include the development of interprofessional mini-courses or other IPHE opportunities.  

The successful candidate will also be expected to support curricula development and revisions occurring within the various programs as the faculty work to refresh the programs and update where needed. 

The successful candidate will preferably hold a PhD in Recreation, Kinesiology, Health Promotion or a related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of strong teaching, organizational, and effective interpersonal and communication skills. The successful candidate must be prepared to work individually, with faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students to grow and improve the delivery of the undergraduate and graduate programs within the School. It is expected that the successful candidate will serve on School and Faculty-level committees.

The primary duties of this position include the preparation and delivery of undergraduate and graduate teaching in health promotion. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses corresponding with a demonstrated area of expertise and the teaching needs of the Health Promotion BSc and MA programs (e.g., introduction to health promotion, mental health promotion, research methods). The individual will act as coordinator for the internship program and serve as the academic lead for students on internship. As well, the candidate is expected to serve as the Honours Coordinator for the undergraduate programs in health promotion and leisure/recreation The successful candidate will also be expected to support curricula development and revisions occurring within the Health Promotion BSc and MA programs as the faculty work to implement a revised program and will be expected to engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Experience in internship coordination, honours research coordination, and the scholarship of teaching and learning will be considered assets.

The successful candidate will preferably hold a PhD in Health Promotion or a health-related field.  Expertise in foundational health promotion tenets, the social and/or structural determinants of health and health equity, and in innovative teaching strategies such as teaching online would be an asset. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of strong teaching, organizational, and effective interpersonal and communication skills. The successful candidate must be prepared to work individually, with faculty, staff, and teaching assistants and students to grow and improve the delivery of the Health Promotion undergraduate and graduate programs. It is expected that the successful candidate will serve on the Health Promotion Division and School and Faculty-level committees.
