Today@Dal

Shout-Out is a new peer-to-peer recognition program that allows you to informally give a shout-out to someone in your faculty, department or unit, or in the broader Dal community, who has helped you or your team in some way — big or small, during the past year.

Each day in Today@Dal for the next couple of weeks we'll be featuring just some of the many shout-outs submittted. It will take us some time to feature them all, so make sure to visit the Shout-Out site in myDal for all of the latest kudos and thanks!

A huge shout-out to the supervisor of our Student Services Team, Jennifer Hann. In addition to her responsibilities as Director of the University Prep. program and Mature Student Advisor for the University, she took on the duties of overseeing our Student Services Team with very short notice when we had a change in staffing before the pandemic. Shortly thereafter, we were locked down with the pandemic and all working remotely from home. For the last year and a half Jennifer has kept us continually informed of all the changes that this new normal has entailed by regularly meeting with us, checking in on us and fielding all the operational changes that have been necessary to allow us to offer online classes in an environment that for the most part has been classroom delivery for over 20 years. She is a consummate professional and her signature sense of humor has kept us all going on even the most stressful of days.

Chris Newell is a calm, reassuring presence. He is professional with a heart. Chris has led his team through many changes and challenges, not to mention COVID-19. His team was constantly reassured that if we needed anything, anything at all, to reach out and he would do whatever possible to help us in our work. He needs to be recognized for his contributions to the Office of Advancement and if he is not, the Dalhousie community will miss out on knowing there are supervisors on campus that are great at what they do.

This is a huge shout out to Martin and by extension to all of our IT staff. When we knew working remotely from home was going to be our new normal, Martin sorted out all of the computer equipment people would need to ensure a seamless transition. This involved setting up systems for about 50 people in a very short turnaround time. Since then, Martin has provided ongoing support with grace and humor. We literally couldn't have done anything we have done to date without his mad technical skills. I have always appreciated the way he assists without making those of us who are technically challenged feel like we haven't a brain in our heads. The hurdles we have jumped over technically have been nothing short of amazing when I think how far we have come since the pandemic began. It has allowed us to stay connected even though physically apart.
