Workplace Wellness Grants: Project update #2

Posted by Human Resources on January 19, 2021 in Human Resources

In 2019, the first Workplace Wellness Grants were distributed to nine projects.  This is the second in a series of updates on the projects and their activities and results. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted their ability to implement their plans and we appreciate the efforts of all those involved.

The Faculty of Computer Science's project focused on community building. They organized yoga classes, held a holiday gathering and potluck lunches. Feedback from sessional instructors showed that the potlucks helped make them feel like members of the Faculty. The pandemic prompted a switch to virtual activities while working remotely, like a photo competition.  They got input from members of the Faculty by surveying about what activities were wanted and to get feedback on specific offerings. A Wellness Committee is now established, with a dedicated budget for their activities.

The Faculty of Health's project was a partnership to host a weekly open mindfulness group for anyone at Dal.  A total of 18 sessions were offered to a total of 43 people.  Three additional presentations on the topic were also held.  The evaluation showed that people learned the benefits of a mindfulness practice, they were better able to manage stress, and were able to apply mindfulness to their everyday life. They felt a sense of connection from practicing in a group and increased their focus and confidence.

The Faculty of Management aimed to foster a positive and supportive work environment through community building. They held a Tea 'n' Toast event, a holiday party and a pancake breakfast, organized a blanket exercise, and took part in Walktober and puzzles at lunch time. Participation ranged from 30 to 60 people. Their survey showed support for their past efforts and encouragement for future activities.
