Posted by School for Resource and Environmental Studies on December 3, 2020 in Job Postings

POSTING DATE: December 2, 2020

APPLICATION DEADLINE: December 12, 2020

POSITION: Teaching Assistant for ENVI 5205.03, Law and Policy for Resource and Environmental Management. WINTER TERM 2021 (Jan – April)

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: School for Resource and Environmental Studies, 6100 University Ave, Suite 5010.

PAY RATE: 90 hours as per CUPE Collective Agreement ($2197 gross pay)

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant (TA) will be responsible for reviewing and understanding the content and Instructor's expectations related to two key assignments in the course (one related to Constitutional responsibility in relation to natural resource and environmental issues in Canada, and the other related to a private and public law environmental management fact set), fielding questions from students as they undertake their research on these assignments, and then marking the resulting individually submitted assignments. These assignments together represent ~40% of the students' final grades in the course.

This course will be offered entirely online and is a required course in the Master of Resource and Environmental Management (MREM) program offered in the School for Resource and Environmental Studies. It is also cross-listed as MGMT4205.03 in the Bachelor of Management program in the Faculty of Management. This course traditionally draws students from a number of graduate and undergraduate programs on campus in addition to the MREM program. The typical total class size is between 35 and 45 students. Students in the class often have very diverse prior academic backgrounds though the vast majority will have little to no prior formal exposure to natural resource and environmental law or policy.

The TA will be required to be available to field questions from students in a timely and professional manner and potentially meet virtually with students seeking guidance related to the two assignments. As the assignments will be submitted and graded digitally through the course learning site (Brightspace), the TA will require personal access to a computer and high-speed internet.

It is essential that the TA consults with, and as needed, works collaboratively with the course instructor.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Applicants must be Dalhousie students or graduates. Applicants must have prior training in the law and/or prior experience in the course and its assignments. Experience with teaching, facilitation and marking is an asset. TAs must be highly proficient in written communication in the English languageexperienced using Brightspace learning software as a part of a course teaching team; reliable; enthusiastic about the course topics; and comfortable in facilitating the learning of students while not simply providing them with the answers. A successful applicant who is still enrolled in a graduate program at the time that the TAship occurs will be required to submit a form signed by their graduate studies supervisor acknowledging the TA position.
