TEACHING ASSISTANT POSTING -FIGS 0009: Navigate Your Science Degree

POSITION: TA 20
PAY RATE: According to the CUPE Agreement
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Faculty of Science /Killam Library (Room 2600)
WORK ASSIGNMENT: In collaboration with the course instructor, the TA will help prepare materials, for in class activities, and communicate with guest speakers for the 7 synchronous sessions (1.5 hrs. each session) for the Faculty of Science FIGS 0009: Navigate Your Science Degree. TA's will also attend each session and lead small group discussions and facilitate peer-to-peer learning. The TAs will collaborate with the course coordinator to ensure that the sessions run smoothly for the first-year students enrolled.
COURSE FORMAT: Each session begins with a mini-lecture that is focused on themes such as: exploring career paths, building an academic plan incorporating professional skill development, finding relevant volunteer opportunities to explore career interests, and resume development. Grounded by the theme explored in the mini-lecture, students will then break into small groups for discussion and hands-on activities. Each small group will work through the weekly theme through small group discussions and other active learning activities.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: This position is open to graduate and senior undergraduate students. Co-op graduates or senior Co-op students would be especially well suited for the positions. Candidates must demonstrate a strong communication and leadership skills. Successful candidates must be enthusiastic and outgoing; he or she must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with first-year students. Candidates must be available on Fridays between 2:30-4:00 pm
