Accessing computer labs and software remotely: New online environment for faculty and students

Posted by Information Technology Services (ITS) on September 2, 2020 in General Announcements

Visit the new Software Access Information site for details on new virtual and remote computer labs to support teaching and learning, as well as instructions on how to download software to individual student machines for specific courses.

With most instruction occurring online this year, Dalhousie has developed virtual computer labs and remote lab access to allow instructors and students to use specialized software as required.

Visit the new Software Access Information site for information on the new virtual and remote computer labs, as well as instructions on how to download software to individual student machines for specific courses.

  • Dal now has two virtual labs (VLab1 and VLab2) that will deliver specialized software for Engineering, Architecture, Business, and other programs that require specialized software via a browser on a virtual desktop. Access to the labs are limited to students enrolled in courses that require the use of specific software.
  • Dal is also providing remote access to the physical lab computers across campus using our remote lab (RLab).  Students can access a specialized lab (e.g., Engineering) by logging into the RLab, picking a location they would normally go for labs (e.g., Sexton room XXXX) and logging into an available computer from that location.
  • The Software Access Information Site also provides access to the university's Software Downloads page so students can download software they require for specific courses.

Faculty should confirm that we have your course listed in the table and which lab option (virtual or remote access) you are able to share with students. There is a form on the site for faculty to request software or delete software access for a course. Some software is available in multiple formats — download, a remote lab, or virtual lab — to allow several options for students in the approved courses.
