POSITION: Laboratory & Field-based Teaching Assistants for ENVS2500 Field Methods in Environmental Science (3 x 45-hour positions)

JOB DESCRIPTION: ENVS2500 is a fall term field course scheduled from 9:30-12:30 every Friday during the Fall term (13 weeks). The course is a combination of field and wet lab instruction with students visiting a variety of nearby field sites which may include Point Pleasant Park, Sir Sandford Fleming Park, the Williams Lake / Colpitt Lake Backlands area and various locations on campus and
around downtown Halifax. The course focuses on three modules: (1) biological sampling with a focus on visual and auditory identification of Atlantic avian species, and visual identification of Atlantic amphibian / reptile species, (2) soil sampling
and composition analysis with a potential for a water sampling component, and (3) air quality and/or noise level sampling. The course seeks three teaching assistants with prior experience in one or more of the above modules, though all TAs will need to be present for all off-campus field excursions.

Responsibilities include managing student groups while in the field, providing on site instruction and guidance, marking lab assignments, tests, and quizzes, and responding to student queries. TAs will also meet with the course instructor and other community collaborators (e.g., NCC, NS Bird Society) outside of class time as needed to prepare for course activities. The position
requires availability during scheduled field / lab sessions and may include before hours set-up and after-hours clean-up.

REQUIREMENTS:  The Teaching Assistant must be a senior undergraduate or graduate student at Dalhousie University, preferably with some experience in one or more of the above three course modules. The ability to communicate effectively, to lead and engage students and encourage interaction with guest leaders, provide constructive feedback, and demonstrate competency and adherence to safety in the field are important assets for this position. First aid certification and valid driver’s license also an asset.
