POSITION: Course Coordinator for two sections of CSCI 1800: Case Studies in Computing and Society (Fall Term 2019); Course Instructor for one section of CSCI 1801: Society and Technology Since the Age of Automation (Winter 2019)

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Faculty of Computer Science, 6050 University Avenue

PAY RATE: As per CUPE Collective Agreement, appointment at 3 credit hours (Fall Term 2019) and 6 credit hours (Winter Term 2020).

WORK ASSIGNMENT: In Fall 2019, this sessional appointment will serve as course coordinator responsible for the coordination,
organization, and administration of two sections of CSCI1800 “Computing and Society in History” a required writing-intensive course for first-year computer science students.

Duties include: 1) attending all lectures; 2) assisting with lecture delivery, student response system (TopHat), and lecture recording; 3) managing online course material, including posting of student resources, documents, slides, and audio on Brightspace and TopHat; 4) serving as primary student contact via office hours (3h/week) and email; 5) organizing team members, including up to 20 TAs: serving as first point of contact for TAs, assisting with TA recruitment, training, and mentoring, and running weekly team meetings (2h/week); 6) supervising student assessments including: supervising TA grading, harmonizing grades; final exam printing and proctoring; proctoring make-up final exams if necessary; 7) managing Academic Integrity offences, including filing accusations and attending meetings; 8) collaborating with the course instructor on instructional design and students assessments; providing detailed written feedback at end of term.

During the Fall 2019 term, they will also be responsible for one tutorial of approximately 25 students, with duties including: leading one-50minute tutorial per week; completing appropriate preparation /reading; grading weekly papers and final exam; communication with students via email, Brightspace, and/or in person; tracking and enter grades on Brightspace; and attending meetings/training.

In the Winter 2020 term, this sessional appointment will be responsible for instruction, organization, and administration of one section of CSCI 1801 “Case Studies in Computing and Society,” a required writing-intensive course for first-year computer science students. FULL TA SUPPORT IS PROVIDED.

Duties include: 1) preparation of all classes, including syllabus, lectures, and supporting materials; 2) collaborating with the instructor of another section of CSCI 1801 in order to harmonize and sync all course assessments for the two sections; 3) managing online course material, including posting of student resources, documents, slides, and audio on Brightspace and TopHat; 4) organizing team members, including TAs; assisting with TA recruitment, training, and mentoring; 5) supervising student assessments, including supervising TA grading, harmonizing grades; final exam printing and proctoring; proctoring make-up final exams if necessary; 6) managing Academic Integrity offences, including filing accusations and attending
meetings.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: PhD in a field relevant to the History and/or Philosophy of Science and Technology, completed or ABD. Preference will be given to those applicants with the following background and experience:

Teaching first-year students;
Managing Teaching Assistants;
Teaching students with technical backgrounds;
Teaching multi-language learners;
Teaching writing-intensive courses.
