Pain Support for Employees

Posted by Human Resources on November 14, 2018 in Human Resources

November is pain awareness month at Dalhousie, dedicated to employees who live and work with chronic pain.  Resulting from the findings in the Quality of Work Life Survey, this new workplace health focus includes a pain support group, education sessions on the numerous aspects of the issue, and a Brightspace page that serves as an information repository.

Here are some thoughts from members of the pain support group:

"The sessions have provided me the opportunity to connect with other Dal colleagues who come to work every day in pain.  Together, we share and learn from one another on how to cope with pain while at work."

"Sharing my experiences with pain has always been a challenge for me, mainly out of my personal fear of stigma.  The pain support group has allowed me to share these experiences in a non-judgmental space which has alleviated some of the stresses associated with this issue."

"Through discussions at these meetings, I have discovered how many layers there are to the topic of pain – physical, emotional, psychological, relational. I have gained good insight into my own situation and can relate so well to the stories of the others who come."

Upcoming sessions:

Your Healthy Back (Halifax & Truro) (Nov. 15th)

Pain: More Tools for the Toolkit, Part 1 (Halifax & Truro) (Nov. 21st)

Pain: More Tools for the Toolkit, Part 2 (Halifax & Truro) (Nov. 26th)
