PART-TIME ACADEMIC POSTING
DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY
HALIFAX, NS B3H 3J5

POSTING DATE:   September 11, 2017
APPLICATION DEADLINE:  October 2, 2017

POSITION:  Part-time Academic

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION:  School for Resource and Environmental Studies

RATE OF PAY: According to the CUPE Agreement

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Sessional Instructor will teach Law and Policy for Resource and Environmental Management (ENVI 5205) in the 2017/18 winter term.  This is a required course for all Master of Resource and Environmental Management (MREM) students but is open to other graduate students.  The calendar entry is as follows: “This course provides students with an overview of substantive and procedural aspects of Canadian law and policy related to natural resources and the environment. The course will involve lectures, guest speakers, seminar discussions and class participation. Strong emphasis is placed on the Canadian legislative and regulatory framework and the unique character of the regulated subject areas such as toxic substances, air and water quality, fisheries, forests, agriculture, minerals, parks and biodiversity. The role of the common law in preventing or redressing environmental degradation will also be addressed.”  The organization of the course is flexible but for those students enrolled in the MREM programme, a substantial portion of the student’s final grade must be based on group work that spans this and two other courses (socio-political and biophysical dimensions of resource and environmental management) that are taken simultaneously.

There is a course syllabus in place for this course, although modifications may be made by the successful candidate. The successful candidate will also be able to call upon the regular course instructor for guidance and support in the organization and delivery.

The Sessional Instructor will be responsible for lectures, organization of guest speakers, discussions, office hour consultations, and grading.  The winter course is scheduled for one 3-hour class per week to be held Thursdays 14:35-17:25 p.m.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:  A law degree combined with either a graduate degree in resource or environment studies or substantial professional experience in related areas.
