February 14
Valentine’s Day
The history of Valentine's Day – and its patron saint – is shrouded in mystery. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance and gradually became the date for exchanging love messages; St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers.

February 15
National Flag of Canada Day
February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996. It marks the day in 1965 when the red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and indeed, hundreds of communities across Canada. Red and white were designated as Canada's official colours in 1921 by His Majesty George V.

Nirvana Day (BU, JA)
Observed primarily by Mahayana Buddhists, most commonly on February 15. The day commemorates the death of the historical Buddha and his entry into Nirvana. Nirvana Day is a time for contemplation of the Buddha’s teachings. Some monasteries and temples hold meditation retreats.

Washington’s Birthday (US)
A United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honour of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Colloquially, the holiday is widely known as "Presidents’ Day."

February 20
Nova Scotia Heritage Day
Nova Scotia Heritage Day is an opportunity to celebrate the collective cultural heritage in Nova Scotia. This year celebrates Mi'kmaq Heritage. The Mi'kmaq and their ancestors have lived in this land for at least 11,000 years. Mi'kma'ki, their traditional territory, includes Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and much of New Brunswick and the Gaspe Peninsula.

World Day for Social Justice (UN)
The United Nations’ (UN) World Day of Social Justice is annually observed on February 20 to encourage people to look at how social justice affects poverty eradication. It also focuses on the goal of achieving full employment and support for social integration.
