Think before you toss

Posted by Facilities on November 23, 2016 in Facilities Management

Dalhousie’s Department of Facilities Management is asking for your help when disposing of heavy items. All bags of waste on campus have to be physically moved by our staff, and when bags are too heavy, it can cause injury. Also, please think about our staff when disposing of glass or other sharp items.

Here are a few tips to help keep our campus clean:

WEIGHT – Please do not put items that add up to more than 50 pounds in one garbage bag. For larger items that require waste removal please call Client Reception at (902) 494-3345 (Halifax)  or   (902) 893-4638  (Truro).

SHARP ITEMS –Glass should be boxed, taped shut and labelled as broken glass and disposed of in the garbage stream. Other sharps need to be dealt with on a case by case basis. Medical sharps like needles must go in the Bio-hazard bins and handled as Biological waste through the Health and safety Office. Sharps that don’t fall in either of those categories should be wrapped to render them harmless for staff who physically handle them after disposal and folks can contact me for advice if unsure how to proceed.

Dalhousie uses clear bags as much as possible as per HRM’s regulations. We are trying to divert up to 70% of all our waste from landfills by 2020. To find out more about What Goes Where, please download and read this PDF guide.
