Applications are invited for a full-time limited term Instructor appointment in the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University. This will be a 100% FTE appointment for 13 months beginning January 1, 2017 and ending January 31, 2018.
The Instructor hired for this position will be jointly responsible for the laboratory component of the first year courses Principles of Biology I (BIOL 1010) & II (BIOL 1011) at approximately 75% of appointment and jointly responsible for the online courses Introductory Biology I (BIOL 1020) & II (BIOL 1021) at approximately 25% of appointment.
For BIOL 1010 and 1011, the position involves coordination of the weekly laboratory activities; teaching in the laboratories; preparation of laboratory manuals; hiring and supervising teaching assistants; managing delivery of tests, exams, and online quizzes; managing course grades and the class website; communication with students and with other teaching faculty and technical staff; and other course-related duties as required.
For BIOL 1020 and 1021, the position involves assisting with development and revision of laboratory activities for online delivery, co-development of weekly live sessions, and other course-related duties as required.
Candidates should have an advanced degree in Biology or a related field and previous laboratory and lecture teaching experience; in particular, previous work with first-year university students will be an asset. Broad knowledge of biology across the range of introductory topics, as well as engagement with the science education literature, will be beneficial in this position, as will previous experience with the Brightspace learning management system. Candidates must have demonstrated strong teaching ability, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
Salary will be according to qualifications and experience, as determined by the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of Dalhousie University and the Dalhousie Faculty Association.
