Applications are invited for a 50% of full-time, 10-month (October 1, 2016 – July 31, 2017), limited term appointment Instructor position in the College of Sustainability. The College of Sustainability is internationally recognized for its innovative approach to interdisciplinary undergraduate education. The College offers an undergraduate Environment, Sustainability and Society program which students complete as a double major paired with one of seven Bachelors’ degree programs across five Dalhousie Faculties. The ESS program is offered in conjunction with over forty other subject areas. Over 40 Dalhousie professors are presently cross-appointed to the College, which provides an interdisciplinary forum for collaborative learning and teaching on the most pressing issues of our time. This position combines administrative and teaching responsibilities. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate accomplishment or potential in both areas. Teaching will be at the undergraduate level, and evidence of previous teaching effectiveness should be provided. The College of Sustainability seeks candidates with a strong interest and capacity for interdisciplinary teaching and who hold a Master’s degree in a sustainability-related field, or equivalent professional experience. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of how their academic background interacts with other disciplines and traditions in the pursuit of a sustainable future. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a professional interest in issues related to teaching within the College.
Primary teaching responsibilities are coordinating and co-teaching core SUST-designated classes in the ESS Major. SUST classes are collaboratively-team taught by multi-disciplinary teams of instructors, supported by graduate teaching assistants. Enrolments are typically 200-250 in first year classes, and 80-120 in upper year classes. The position will include assigned teaching of 2.0 credits, plus possible honours thesis and/or project supervision. Administrative duties will include routine College duties and participation in special projects in the College. This position is conceived as developmental opportunities; applications are encouraged from recent PhDs and Post-doctoral scholars.
This position will include co-instructor duties in SUST 1001 Introduction to Environment, Sustainability and Society II (Winter Term, 1.0 full credit). This position requires expertise in sustainability issues related to global climate change, biodiversity and food production; expertize in the role of indigenous and traditional knowledge systems in sustainability would be an asset. One additional full credit of teaching will also be assigned.
