WORK ASSIGNMENT: The sessional instructor will teach Economics for Resource and Environmental Management (ENVI 5031) during the 2016/17 fall term. The calendar entry is as follows: “This class is designed as a one term introduction to economics for graduate students who do not have any or limited undergraduate economics training. However, it is also suitable for students with prior economics training who are interested in exploring the environment-economy relationship further. The class begins with a brief but intense guided tour of economics. We then focus on key topics in environmental economics, including among others: the sustainable economy; theory of market failure, public goods and externalities; environmentalist critiques of economic thinking; environmental and natural resource accounting; economic valuation of the environment; time in economic/environmental analysis. The final part of the class explores the theory and practice of a new discipline which bette! r integrates environmental and economic analysis; namely the field of ecological economics. The class is open to students in other parts of the University who are interested in economy and environment.

The course is scheduled for 3 hours per week to be held on Fridays, 11:35-14:25, September through December 2016. In recent years, this course has attracted 30- 40 students drawn from various graduate programs.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Sessional Instructor will teach Environmental Education (ENVI 5041) during the 2016 fall term. The Calendar entry is as follows: “This course provides a broad examination of the conceptual bases of learning and understanding the environment. It will consider current educational efforts to promote values, attitudes, and behaviors protective of environmental integrity. Topics covered will include environmental education in formal school programs, experiential environmental education, environmental literacy initiatives, continuing professional education, and the role of the media in environmental education.” The instructor will take direction from syllabi for previous offerings of the course, and secure the Director’s approval for the syllabus for this offering.

The course is scheduled for 3 hours per week to be held on Mondays, 8:35-11:25, September-December 2016.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: PhD and/or Masters with equivalent experience in related discipline. The following qualifications would be considered assets: practical experience in teaching, working and/or community activity in environmental education at the university or post-graduate level; interest/experience in experiential education; curriculum development at local, regional, or international level; experience working with MES students on environmental education research.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The sessional instructor will prepare, teach and grade all assignments associated with Environmental Informatics (ENVI 5507) during the 2016 fall term. This course is offered to approximately 30 students with varying degrees of prior exposure to environmental informatics tools and techniques. Students are drawn primarily from the Master of Resource and Environmental Management program though other graduate and senior undergraduate students may also take the course with permission. The course involves both lecture and computer lab-based learning and is offered through a once a week three-hour teaching block that is scheduled for Mondays from 17:35 to 20:25.

The Calendar entry for this course is as follows:
“Environmental informatics refers to digital systems for environmental monitoring, analysis, communication and decision-making. The course will cover: digital data and where to find it; how to access such data ethically and manage it intelligently; tools and techniques necessary for making best use of those data; and, a working knowledge of a subset of those datasets, tools and techniques, including census, spreadsheets, database management systems and geographic information systems.”

There is a well-developed syllabus, set of course materials and assignments in place for this course. The instructor will ideally follow these materials though some deviation to accommodate the instructor’s knowledge and skills is acceptable.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: PhD and/or Masters with equivalent experience in related discipline. Strong understanding of -- and experience with – most or all of the following is required: management of data in spreadsheets, geographic information systems and database design and management. Prior teaching experience is a strong asset.
