POSITION: Part-time Academic
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Biology and Integrated Science / Life Sciences Centre

PAY RATE: In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement, for a 3 credit hour course

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the first-year Biology component (specifically the Ecology section) of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science. Period of work is September 1–December 31, 2016. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering lectures; posting materials on Brightspace; devising integrated assessments (which may include assignments, quizzes and exams) in which Biology is one of multiple integrated components; field trip coordinating and teaching; and field trip TA recruitment and supervision. Also contribute to the writing in science component by taking responsibility for the first formal writing assignment, a field trip report, which includes instruction in formal scientific writing and report preparation, and providing extensive feedback on individual student reports. In addition, the instructor will attend weekly Integrated Science faculty meetings focused on integration of science disciplines and contribute to inte! grated learning activities with other instructors.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Applicants should have an advanced degree in Biology or a related subject, with research and teaching expertise in ecology; evidence of teaching effectiveness; a strong interest in integrated approaches to teaching science; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Learning Management Systems; extensive experience leading field trips with university students; experience marking student research reports; and up-to-date Standard First Aid and CPR.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Psychology and Integrated Science / Life Sciences Centre

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the first year Psychology/ Neuroscience component of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science, from January 1, 2016 – April 30, 2017. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering lectures; posting materials on Brightspace; devising integrated assessments (which may include assignments, quizzes and exams) in which Psychology/ Neuro-science is one of multiple integrated components; coordinating Psychology/ Neuroscience laboratory sections, grading, and TA recruitment and supervision; coordinating the Psychology/ Neuroscience research projects; and supervising teams of students who work together on a research question. The latter includes weekly meetings with student teams, and marking individual formal written assignments and team oral presentations. In addition, the instructor will attend weekly Integrated Science faculty meetings focused on integration of the science disciplines and contribute to in! tegrated learning activities with other instructors.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Applicants should have an advanced degree in Psychology or Neuroscience or a related subject; excellent teaching potential and a strong interest in integrated approaches to teaching science; and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Learning Management Systems. Assets: Previous experience teaching in a university setting, and supervising undergraduate research.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Integrated Science / Life Sciences Centre

PAY RATE: In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement, for a 6 credit hour course.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the first-year Statistics component of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science. Period of work is September 1, 2016 - April 30, 2017. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering lectures on Introductory Statistics; teaching about research design, and analysis and presentation of data; posting materials on Brightspace; devising assessments (which may include assignments, quizzes and exams) in which Statistics is one of multiple integrated components; incorporating data collected by students into lectures, lab exercises, and assignments; supervising TAs to mark assignments and teach labs that use R; and providing statistical support for the research projects in the winter term. The latter may include meeting with student teams, and marking formal written assignments and team oral presentations. Class schedule varies; in fall term, labs are Tues 0900-1000, lectures are Tues 1000-1130 and/or Thurs 1030-! 1130. In addition, the instructor will attend weekly Integrated Science faculty meetings and contribute to integrated learning activities with other instructors to facilitate the integration of Statistics and research methods across the sciences.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Graduate degree in Statistics or experience teaching Statistics to undergraduates; strong interest in teaching in an interdisciplinary context; evidence of teaching effectiveness. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D., previous experience supervising undergraduate research, and/or previous experience teaching statistics within an integrated science context. Academic and/or research background in more than one scientific field is an asset.
