Learn about first‑year student success methods from John Gardner

Posted by Student Affairs on May 10, 2016 in General Announcements

John Gardner has researched and consulted on the first-year student experience for over 20 years. He leads the Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education and has supported many institutions, including several in Canada, in improving the first-year experience for their students, resulting in increased retention rates.

On May 17 and 18, in support of Dalhousie’s strategic priority to increase retention, John Gardner will bring his expertise to campus to guide us in implementing specific student success initiatives including those relating to teaching and learning.

INVITATION TO KEYNOTE SESSION
Professor Gardner’s keynote “The Dalhousie First Year Experience: Reflections on Reimagining the First Year” is open to all on Tues., May 17 (10:30 AM–noon; Ondaatje Hall). In this interactive session, Dr. Sandra Walde, associate dean academic in the Faculty of Science, will present her analysis of Dalhousie data relating to first-year student success. John will challenge us to think about how to make the totality of students’ initial experiences with us the “foundation” of an excellent undergraduate education.

In addition to a wide variety of sessions over the two days, John will lead several faculty-specific discussions, aimed at addressing their particular needs and challenges.

We encourage you to attend relevant sessions to assist in our goal of promoting a culture of student success and retention at Dalhousie. We look forward to this exciting event.
