Instructor Positions (Limited Term), College of Sustainability

Applications are invited for up to 2 full-time, one 12 months (position 1) and one 10 month (August-May)(position2), limited term (3 years) Instructor positions in the College of Sustainability. The College of Sustainability is internationally recognized for its innovative approach to interdisciplinary undergraduate education. The College offers an undergraduate Environment, Sustainability and Society program which students complete as a double major paired with one of seven Bachelors’ degree programs across five Dalhousie Faculties.  The ESS program is offered in conjunction with over forty other subject areas. Over 40 Dalhousie professors are presently cross-appointed to the College, which provides an interdisciplinary forum for collaborative learning and teaching on the most pressing issues of our time. These positions combine administrative and teaching responsibilities. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate accomplishment or potential in both areas. Teaching will be at the undergraduate level, and evidence of previous teaching effectiveness should be provided. The College of Sustainability seeks candidates with a strong interest and capacity for interdisciplinary teaching and who hold a Master’s degree in a sustainability-related field, or equivalent professional experience. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of how their academic background interacts with other disciplines and traditions in the pursuit of a sustainable future.  Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a professional interest in issues related to teaching within the College.

Primary teaching responsibilities are coordinating and co-teaching core SUST-designated classes in the ESS Major. SUST classes are collaboratively-team taught by multi-disciplinary teams of instructors, supported by graduate teaching assistants. Enrolments are typically 200-250 in first year classes, and 80-120 in upper year classes. Both positions will include assigned teaching of 3.0 credits per year, plus honors thesis and/or project supervision. Administrative duties will include routine College duties and participation in special projects in the College (such as the Sustainability Leadership Certificate). These positions are conceived as developmental opportunities; applications are encouraged from recent PhDs and Post-doctoral scholars.

Position 1 (12 month) will include co-instructor duties in SUST 2000 Local Governance, Citizen Engagement and Sustainability (Fall Term, 100 students, 1.0 credits), and in SUST 4000 ESS Capstone (Fall and Winter Terms, 60 students, 1.0 credits). This position requires expertise in problem- and project-based learning approaches, project management and planning, broad research methods, and group learning and teaching approaches. Two additional full credits of teaching will also be assigned.

Position 2 (10 month) will include co-instructor duties in SUST 2001 Environment, Sustainability & Governance: A global perspective (Winter Term, 120 students, 1.0 credits), academic lead for RBC-SLC, SUST 4900 ESS Honours Thesis Project.  This position requires expertise in sustainability issues related to the built environment, international governance and agreements, and social change movements. One additional full credit of teaching will also be assigned.
