Position Title: RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Start date:                   November 30th 2015 (1 month probation)
End date:                    February 28th 2015 (negotiable)
Location:                     Dalhousie University
Remuneration: $21.50 per hour
Workload:                   10-15 hours per week (negotiable)
 
Description
 
In Nova Scotia, the issue of regional development is of immediate importance.  The process undertaken by the Ivany commission, resulting in the One Nova Scotia report and heavily influencing recent provincial budgets, explicitly addressed the issue.  This project exploits the Ivany process as a snapshot of the RD subsystem in the province, and seeks to establish an accurate picture of the key players in that subsystem.
 
A research assistant (RA) will be hired to assist with the project of coding the 102 submissions to the Ivany commission, with regard to their eventual influence on the Commission’s report and recommendations.  Deadlines are tight, as a significant rate of completion is required by early February 2016.
 
Responsibilities
 
The RA is expected to familiarize themselves with the project and the coding process (to be determined by the primary researcher. As a part of the position, the RA will have the following responsibilities:
·         Acquire copies of / secure access to the 102 submissions to the Ivany commission
·         Code submissions to the commission using provided criteria
 
Qualifications
 
The ideal candidate must have a graduate level degree, or be in the final stages of completing a graduate level degree, and have demonstrated experience with coding documents for research purposes. Preference will be given to those with a demonstrated political science / public administration research focus, but other research backgrounds will also be considered. The RA will have some flexibility in work hours, but must be willing to work to firm deadlines, with the expectations that at time, this might mean working outside of standard work hours. The ideal candidate will commit to the project and project outcomes. The first month of the position is probationary.
