PART-TIME ACADEMIC POSTING

POSITION: Part-Time Academics – Italian classes as listed below (parental leave replacement) DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: French (Italian Studies)
PAY RATE: Per the CUPE Collective Agreement

WORK ASSIGNMENT:

The Italian Studies programme is seeking qualified candidates for a parental leave replacement beginning in mid-November.  The precise start date for fall term classes is dependent on the leave.

The following classes need to be filled:

ITAL 1010x (Italian for Beginners)—3-4 weeks in the fall 2015 semester
ITAL 1010y (Italian for Beginners) – the entire winter 2016 semester
ITAL 2010 x (Intermediate Italian) – 3-4 weeks in the fall 2015 semester
ITAL 2010y (Intermediate Italian) – the entire winter 2016 semester
ITAL 3600 (Italian National Cinema: The New Wave)—3-4 weeks in the fall 2015 semester

The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class or partial class, including lectures, test preparation, evaluation, and electronic submission of grades. Part-time academics are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. Part-time academics report to the Chairperson of the Department.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
Candidates should be PhD holders with specialization in Italian language and culture and have relevant teaching experience. There is a requirement for an interview for all candidates who have not previously been interviewed for a position at the 1010 or above level, who have never held a full time position in the department or who are not retired faculty. Any candidate has a right to be re-interviewed for each new hiring cycle but must specifically request this. Candidates should provide a letter of application, current C.V., and evidence of teaching effectiveness, by the above application deadline. Interviews will be conducted face to face or, exceptionally, by telephone.

WORK ASSIGNMENT:

A part-time academic instructor is needed to teach Italian 2200.03 (Modern Italian Culture) for the winter term of the 2015-2016 academic year (1 January 2016-30 April 2016).

This course will focus on the transformation of modern Italian culture from the early twentieth century to the present, with discussion of major historical and social events of the period. Topics may include fascism, futurism, neo-realism, the rise of media culture, Italian cinema, and Italy’s political role in the European Union. As instructor, the candidate will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, test preparation, evaluation and electronic submission of grades. Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.  Instructors report to the Chairperson of the Department.

Normally a PhD degree in Italian, plus previous teaching experience. Native or near-native competence in Italian, though the course is taught in English. There is a requirement for an interview for all candidates who have not previously been interviewed for a position at the 1010 or above level, who have never held a full time position in the department or who are not retired faculty. Any candidate has a right to be re-interviewed for each new hiring cycle but must specifically request this. In addition to a letter of application, candidates may submit any supporting document they deem relevant, such as a CV, student evaluations, etc. Interviews will be conducted face to face or, exceptionally, by telephone.
