Posted by Office of Human Rights, Equity and Harassment Prevention on July 6, 2015 in General Announcements

Each year the Dalhousie Office of Human Rights, Equity & Harassment Prevention (HREHP) develops a mosaic calendar of religious holidays and cultural dates for faculty, staff and students. The complete calendar is available on the website.

All Jewish and Islamic Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the first date shown.

JULY 8
Jum'at al-Wada (Islam)

(Farewell Friday) is the last Friday of the month of Ramadan and the Friday immediately preceding.

JULY 9
Martyrdom of Bab (BA)

July 9, Baha'is around the world commemorate the date in 1850 that the Bab - one of two main figures in the founding of their Faith - was executed by a firing squad in Iran, then called Persia. It is commemorated as a solemn Holy Day by Bahá'ís around the world.

The Bab, whose name means "gate" in Arabic, had declared in 1844 that He was a messenger of God sent to prepare the way for the long-awaited promised one of all religions who would come to establish an age of universal peace. In 1863 Baha'u'llah announced publicly that He was that promised one.

Observed by abstaining from commerce and work.
