Barbara Mealiea's retirement

Posted by Human Resources on June 1, 2015 in Community Highlights

After more than 30 years at Dal, Barbara Mealiea, Director, Human Resources Information Services (HRIS), will be retiring in June.

She began her career at Dalhousie in 1975 with Henson College of Continuing Education where she spent her first 11 years. Barbara then joined Financial Services where she held four different positions. In 2004 she made the move to Human Resources where she has remained until her retirement. Barbara’s role as Director, HRIS, includes overseeing the university’s payroll as well as all Human Resources systems development and information analysis.

During her time at the university, Barbara has been an active volunteer and contributed to numerous committees. She has been a longtime volunteer for the United Way that culminated with the position of Lead Co-Chair of the Dalhousie campaign. In her first year in this position the campaign broke the record of $200,000 in donations. In addition, Barbara acted on various DPMG committees and was treasurer for three years. She was a Board Appointee for five years with the Halifax Student Housing Society and also volunteers for the Dalhousie Environmental Health and Safety Committee.

Outside of the Dalhousie community, Barbara has been an active board member and treasurer of the Avalon Sexual Assault Centre. She also acted as an Official Agent for a candidate in the most recent provincial and federal elections.

Barbara’s retirement is our loss, but is well deserved after her many years of service. There will be a celebration in her honour on June 4, 3 – 5 p.m., at the University Club Pub. All are invited to join us in saying thank you, goodbye and best wishes for a happy retirement to Barbara!
