Two‑part workshop: Creating a Teaching Dossier

Posted by Centre for Learning and Teaching on May 6, 2015 in General Announcements

Facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Le-May Sheffield, the two-part workshop will take place on Thursday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 26, 2015 in Room B400 of the Killam Library from 9:00 am to noon.

The teaching dossier (or portfolio) is widely used by university academic staff to document their teaching skills and responsibilities and to provide evidence of the quality of their teaching practice. In many faculties and departments at Dalhousie, candidates for appointment, re-appointment, tenure, or promotion are required to submit a teaching dossier as part of their application. In addition, teaching dossiers and teaching philosophies are increasingly requested for job applications. Beyond these purposes, the act of compiling a dossier requires university teachers to closely examine their teaching practice—an exercise that can help to identify strengths and challenges and guide plans for teaching enhancement and innovation.

The first workshop will provide you with opportunities to think and talk about your approaches to teaching and learning and will outline how to present your ideas and experiences to best effect in the context of a teaching dossier. Particular emphasis and attention will be paid to conceptualizing and writing a teaching philosophy. During the second workshop, faculty members who have read Teaching Dossiers as committee members in the Tenure and Promotion and hiring processes will talk about their experiences of reading dossiers and provide advice from their experience. The session will also provide you with the opportunity to share a draft document with a peer and give and receive feedback.
