POSITION: Part-Time Academic
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Chinese Studies
PAY RATE: As per Collective Agreement with CUPE 3912

WORK ASSIGNMENT: A part-time academic is needed to teach CHIN2050.03 Chinese Culture for the Fall term of the academic year 2015-2016 (September-December 2015). The class is currently scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday 2:30-4:00 pm. The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including admission, lectures, test preparation, evaluation, and electronic submission of grades. Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.  Instructors report to the Chairperson of the Department.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Applicants should have native or near-native proficiency in English and possess a graduate degree in Chinese Culture or a related field or other academic and/or professional qualifications deemed suitable for teaching the class. Knowledge of the Chinese language and previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level will be assets. All applications should include a letter of application with a curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a prospective syllabus for the course.  Applicants who have not taught at Dalhousie should also arrange to have two confidential letters of reference forwarded to the Department.

WORK ASSIGNMENT:
To teach one section of CHIN 1032.03 Introduction to Mandarin Chinese Part I, in the academic year, winter term 2015-2016. The class is currently scheduled for MWF 9:30-10:30 am. The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including admission, lectures, test preparation, evaluation, and electronic submission of grades. Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.
 
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese and possess a graduate degree or other academic and/or professional qualifications deemed suitable for teaching the class. Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level will be an asset. All applications should include a letter of application with a curriculum vitae and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Applicants who have not taught at Dalhousie should also arrange to have two confidential letters of reference forwarded to the Department.
 
For each part-time academic the Chair will conduct an annual assessment of teaching performance, now required under the CUPE Collective Agreement. This assessment will be based on student ratings of instruction and may also include classroom observation, conducted either by the Chair or a representative from the Centre for Learning and Teaching with reasonable advance notice.

The Teaching Assistant will assist with CHIN2050.03 Chinese Culture (taught in English)
 
- Marking student assignments
- Assisting with class discussions
- Assisting students with course requirements
- Conducting tutorials
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
An undergraduate degree. Previous TA experience preferred.  Good essay writing skills and interpersonal skills required to work with groups of students or for one-on-one interaction. Class attendance required (scheduled for TR: 14:35-15:55).
