Nature and Our Health: How our natural environment can improve how we feel, what we do, and who we are

Posted by Employee Organization and Development on January 26, 2015 in Human Resources

We spend a large portion of our time indoors, unknowingly disconnecting ourselves from the outside natural environment and we rarely ask how this separation impacts our own health and the world around us. Recent research has found that being outdoors promotes and sustains our wellbeing; that the simple integration of natural objects (e.g., sunlight and a potted plant) can improve our mood, productivity and behaviours towards others and the environment.

This 60-minute session will cover a range of evidence – psychological, physiological and sociological – that demonstrates how being in and around nature is beneficial to our mental and physical health; encourages positive interpersonal and community relationships; and fosters environmental stewardship and sustainable behaviours. Discussion will focus on how this research can impact the environments that we live and work in and broader institutional and community-level implications.
